Marten, 47, is an eco-activist; he was active in NGOs, in politics, media and he used to organize tours and seminars.
In Northern Moravia, Marten is recognized as „one of the most authentic enviromentalists“. He lives in Dobřečov, Bruntálsko, at the foothills of Jeseníky, a truly unforgiving landscape – over the winter the village can become cut off the civilization for days, with no electricity or heating.
Fourteen years ago, Marten moved form Ostrava into a stone-built house with a large garden. He learned to live in solitude, self-sufficiency and in harmony with nature. For breakfast he drinks a tea from collected herbs, he eats fruits and vegetables from the garden and instead of radio, he listens to “the wind whistling in the woods”. He spends his days tracing lynx and monitoring local woods for insensitive logging.
Even though he made enemies by pushing ecological issues into the spotlight, he stands by his belief that „a man was born for both himself and the others, and that‘s how one should live his life“. Marten is an idealist. He gave up the perks of civlization and consumerism so he could find his own path in harmony. The price he’s paying for nature’s peace and love is stark – his health and palpable social isolation.
